Equine Influenza

The need for increased vigilance of Equine Influenza effects all Equestrian Competitions and Training across the country

Following a meeting with the Equine Infectious Disease Action Group where the increase in the reported Equine Influenza cases was discussed, it was shared that there have been reported cases in 36 counties across Scotland England and Wales. It was agreed that there needed to be a period of increased vigilance and messaging to help prevent the situation becoming one where equine movement and the holding of gatherings or competitions become restricted.

With immediate effect

With immediate effect we are required to implement the following to ensure the continued running of competitions/training during the current Equine Influenza outbreak.

Passport Checks

All venues to carry out passport checks, we will make checks on arrival.

Requesting copies in advance is not a reliable method of checking vaccination status against the equine attending.

Unvaccinated or those with lapsed records must not be allowed to unload/compete.

We are advising customers of the requirement to have passports with their equines and to expect checks to be carried out.

Competition and Training

Maximum numbers in warm up areas will be adhered to

Disinfection takes place between competitions/training especially in stables and areas where there is a high concentration of equines.

Confirmed outbreak

If there is a confirmed outbreak within 1 mile of our venue we will be cancelling or postponing competition/training until cleared to resume following advice from the

Equine Infectious Disease Action Group

6 monthly vaccination

It is strongly recommended that all equines move to a 6 monthly vaccination during this outbreak as it has been shown that the effectiveness of the vaccine drops off over time.
