Dressage is an equestrian sport where horse and rider perform a series of predetermined movements in a rectangular arena. Dressage focuses on developing the horse's athleticism, suppleness, flexibility, and obedience through progressive training methods.
Dressage competitions range from beginner levels to Grand Prix, with increasing complexity and difficulty at each level.
Tack and Equipment
Tack and equipment must adhere to British Dressage rules.
Scoring
Competitors are scored for each movement and set of collective marks drawn awarded across the test as a whole. The total marks are converted to a percentage and the winner is the combination with the highest score.
Every sport needs an organisation to ensure it’s development and so much of British Dressage’s work influences unaffiliated competitions.
Unaffiliated Dressage competitions run under British Dressage rules and judged by trained and registered Judges.
British Dressage Tests start with Introductory (walk and trot), Preliminary (walk, trot and canter) and higher tests to Advanced Medium asking the horse to undertake additional movements, adding a fresh challenge for both horse and rider.
Unaffiliated Dressage competitions can be a good place to start competing. Classes are open to every one with no restriction on who can enter.
No need to plait. More relaxed competition dress. Protective hat and conventional riding footwear must be worn at all times when mounted on a horse.
We want to make you and your horse perform at your best with all the help and support we can offer.
Competitions run most weeks either in a 20m x 40m (Short) or 20m x 60m (Long) arena, typically during the day on Friday or Saturday starting in the morning, and in the summer on some Thursday evenings.
All British Dressage Coaches are insured, first aid trained and DBS checked.
